Concept
This work is the result of research into the visual logic required to depict a minimalist fantasy world in the manner of a traditional Japanese ink and wash brush painting (known as "sumie").
Sumie paintings are traditionally executed on scrolls and the video itself is designed to be played back on five displays side-by-side. It is the story of someone who finds himself lost in a world where he is confronted by his own confusion and stray thoughts as personified by various creatures.
Through his interactions, he eventually attains the internal growth that may be the key to his happiness.
"Sumie" is an extreme example of a scene stripped down to its bare essentials as based on the subjectivity of the human eye. This is the opposite of western concepts of depth perception and objective observation.
The challenge was to preserve that subjective intepretation on a computer and recreate the feel of a sumie painting from all angles, in full motion.
Regarding the artistic challenge of portraying the subjectivity of sumie as a 3D model, we would like to draw your attention to two scenes - the outline of the rock that Snoopy stands on (7:50 - 8:38), and the appearance of the dragons at 1:36.
